About Me

Tamara R. Carpenter

I am an Indiana native, born in ’73 into a tight knit family. I was a tomboy, a daydreamer, and the peacemaker of my family (what a combo). I am a proud North Central High School graduate. Go Panthers!

I consider myself to be a woman of faith who endeavors to be a good wife, bonus mom, daughter, sister, family member, and friend. I love to sing and have led worship at church and performed in local theater productions. I am a lifelong learner (no really). I attended Washington University on full academic scholarship and finished with a double major in business and finance in ’95, graduated from Indiana School of Law in ’98 and obtained my Masters in Public Administration in 2009.

In my professional life, I have been driven by a desire to make a difference in the lives of underserved people and I have been fortunate to work in the non-profit, education and legal sectors.

I am so grateful to be in this season of my life.  2020 brought me more than just two bouts with COVID. I got married for the first time at age forty-seven and became a bonus mom to three teenagers and two cats.

I also made the courageous decision to take the Indiana bar exam. After experiencing first hand the struggle to get a disabled aunt approved for Medicaid, I knew that I wanted to practice Elder Law.

I passed the July 2021 bar and have been practicing Estate Planning and Elder Law since being admitted to practice in February 2022.  It gives me a deep sense of satisfaction to be able to offer comfort to others through my legal practice.  Each client, each family, each story is unique so I take the time to tailor my planning and services to meet those distinct needs. Additionally, I am passionate about helping my clients understand the legal process they are undertaking.  Legal jargon can be frustrating to read and difficult to understand. Court proceedings can be confusing.  Education is an essential part of the client experience at my law firm from our very first meeting.  Whether you retain our services or not I want you to leave our consultation feeling empowered to make the best decision for you and your loved ones. I hope that if you are looking for help with estate planning, medicaid planning or any other legal services related to aging you will take advantage of the free initial consultation with me to  discuss your specific needs and goals.

My Why

In September of 2020, my oldest aunt had a stroke.  She was eighty (80) years old at the time.  Initially it seemed like she would be able to return to her home after rehab, but her health declined as dementia took hold. My aunt was widowed and had no children. She didn’t have a Will or any savings. My seventy-three-year-old(73) mother and another one of her sister’s who was seventy (70) took on the responsibility of finding an assisted living facility for my aunt and figuring out how to pay for it. During this same period of time, I was studying to take the Indiana bar but had not decided what area of law I was going to practice.

After spending hours researching, we determined that we needed to help my aunt apply for Medicaid.  Without legal advice, the task seemed impossible, so we began to look for an attorney.  After meeting with a few attorneys on her own my mom confided in me that she felt very discouraged.  She explained that the lawyers hadn’t listened to her, and, that many of her questions hadn’t been answered.

I saw my mother’s struggle and her embarrassment over being made to feel small and unimportant because of her age. I became determined to devote my legal career to helping caregivers and family members in similar situations feel seen, heard and respected.
